Vivian ‘Yabby You’ Jackson passes away

you3

Vivian ‘Yabby You’ Jackson, the visionary producer/singer, has died. His close friend and musician, Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace said Yabby You passed away last Tuesday in May Pen, Clarendon, from an aneurism. He was 63 years old.

Musicologists rate Yabby You among the great dub artistes of the 1970s, alongside Osbourne ‘King Tubby’ Ruddock and Augustus Pablo. His 1975 debut album, Conquering Lion, has been described as a ‘true cornerstone of Jamaican roots music’ by British reggae historian, Steve Barrow.

Yabby You was born in the Waterhouse community of Kingston and began recording in the early 1970s when roots-reggae was taking off internationally. One of his first songs was Conquering Lion which was recorded at Dynamic Sounds with Wailers bassist Aston ‘Familyman’ Barrett, guitarist Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith and Wallace on drums.

The song was a hit with hardcore roots fans, and set the tone for Yabby You’s reputation, locally and overseas, as an underground act.

Although he wore locks and regarded himself as a Rastafarian, Yabby You considered Jesus Christ as God, hence his other moniker, Jesus Dread. Most Rastafarians recognise the former Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I as the Supreme Being.

Wallace, who worked on many Yabby You productions, said he was «a great thinker».

«He was controversial to some, but popular with many. Yabby had a lot of fans in California and all over Europe,» Wallace said.

Early in his life, Yabby You was hospitalised and treated for malnutrition and also suffered from arthritis. The latter resulted in him using crutches for most of his life.

Physical impediment

Despite his physical impediment, Yabby You recorded profusely. He worked with established musicians, including King Tubby, Sly and Robbie and saxophonist Tommy McCook, a founding member of the legendary Skatalites band.

His King Tubby’s Prophesy of Dub and Blazing Horns featuring McCook and trumpeter Bobby Ellis, are considered Yabby You’s best work.

He also produced songs by singers Wayne Wade and Michael Prophet, as well as deejays Big Youth, Dillinger, Tappa Zukie and Trinity.

Buju Banton Arrested

buju4601251576866

BY JACQUELINE CHARLES

jcharles@MiamiHerald.com

Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton agreed Wednesday to be transferred from Miami to Tampa, where he faces federal drug charges.

Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, is accused along with two others of trying to buy more than five kilograms of cocaine last week from an undercover law-enforcement officer in Sarasota. Banton was arrested Thursday at his home in Tamarac. The charges carry a maximum setence of life in prison, his lawyer said.

Wearing a beige jail jumpsuit and shackles, Banton, 36, sat expressionless in the front row of the Miami federal courtroom Wednesday morning, his trademark dreadlocks pulled back off his narrow face and rolled into a bundle.

Occasionally, he looked across the courtroom where, in the back row, his publicist and two members of the local Jamaican Consulate observed the proceedings.

The only time Banton spoke was when he uttered his real name and age, and confirmed to U.S. Magistrate Judge William Turnoff that he was indeed waiving his bail hearing in Miami to be transferred to Tampa.

«He’s a very spiritual person. He’s a very positive person,» his attorney, Herbert Erving Walker III, said about his mood. «He’s confident he’s going to be exonerated.»

Walker added that Banton, whose album Rasta Got Soul is nominated for the Grammy Reggae Album of the Year, is looking forward to «getting back to doing what he does, which is make music for the people of the world.»

NEW REGGAE FILM-»HOLDING ON TO JAH»

l_c476e04a64b14a49a426f56c6676145d

Holding On To Jah details the history of Jamaica, Reggae music, and the Rasta movement, bringing into focus the critical roles played by Marcus Garvey, and the 225th Emperor of Ethiopia, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie.

Reggae is the sound track that sets the history and struggle of the Rasta people, and of all Jamaicans, to music. Candid interviews with some of Reggae’s greatest singers and musicians (some of whom are no longer with us) tell a collective story of hard times that were endured and overcome because of their great faith. The Rastafarian story is one of police brutality, long jail sentences, deprivation and physical abuse. The film is a testament to their faith, which for them often meant being disowned by family, shunned by friends and dispossessed by society.

The Rastafarians share with us their personal stories of the merging of the Rasta ideology with music that combined island and African rhythms, and how songs from people like Bob Marley, The Congos, Israel Vibration, Culture, and others, have brought forth a positive message and spread the «Rastaman vibration» throughout the world.

The film takes viewers on a journey to the heart of the Rasta movement and shows us how, against great odds, a message of salvation and redemption was born. With courage, tenacity, and faith, the Rastafarian movement emerged, struggled, and continues to thrive. Through all their tribulations they continue to stand firm in their convictions, HOLDING ON TO JAH.
